For John, the road to homelessness began with a painful childhood wracked by physical abuse and domestic violence. He escaped that trauma by using drugs and alcohol as a teen, starting a downward spiral of addiction, crime, and joblessness. John, 66, now is clean and sober. He said staying on the right path would have been more difficult had he not had stable housing at Casa de Novo, where he still lives.
